Flat panel televisions up to 42” LCD television will be, generally, more competitive
Both Plasma and LCD have about the same level of brightness. Nevertheless, LCD's
are generally recommended for bright environments. This is still a sound recommendation
because LCD's generally have a matte screen whereas plasma screens are shiny because
they are glass and there is more of a problem with reflections.
Plasma television can display more variations of deeper blacks than an LCD television
which results in better detail during dark scenes.
LCD televisions cannot display true blacks as accurately due to the technology which
it was founded, the backlight that is displayed through the LCD layer will always
result in some light to be displayed from between the pixels. Although newer generations
of LCD are dramatically improving their black levels, in general plasma televisions
have an advantage in the area of contrast.
Most high definition sets, whether plasma
or LCD, have a resolution of 1,024 x 768 pixels. Looking at the second number, anything
over 720 is considered high definition. Newer flat panels have appeared that have
a higher resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). These are called “1080P” of “Full HD”.
Everything else being equal, a higher resolution is better than a lower resolution.
But of course everything is usually not equal, so it is helpful to look at other
specifications. Higher resolution is also more useful the closer you sit to your
monitor. As you move farther away from the monitor the higher resolution makes less
of a difference. Also, higher resolution sets are more expensive.
